The Oil Spill and Southwest Florida

On May 17, 2010, Dr. Jeff Masters published a theory on Southwest Florida and the oil spill. Based on a study of numerous probes dropped in the Gulf of Mexico in the 1990's, he called the area off the Southwest Coast of Florida "The Forbidden Zone" At this time, it appears the theory is holding its own.

We are about two months into the oil spill and Southwest Florida beaches are clear. It appears the currents are helping to keep the oil away from Southwest Florida. NOAA has decided to cancel Off Shore Forecasting for the oil spill.

"The offshore forecast has been temporarily stopped due to small amounts of oil, the absence of recent observations confirming significant amounts of oil, and the large separation between the loop current complex and the oil slick. Forecasts will resume if the threat returns."
